Harper Voyager Impulse, 2014.

I really wanted to like this book.

Sarah Remy’s debut is published as part of Harper Voyager’s new “Impulse” line, a series of e-books and limited run paperbacks from up-and-coming authors. The books were chosen from an open call in 2012 which garned over 4500 submissions.

Unfortunately this murder mystery/fantasy left me cold. While I liked the characters of Malachi and Avani, a necromancer and hedge witch investigating a series of grisly murders in the remote village of Stonehill Downs, I found the plot would often get bogged down in confusing tangents, and the ending frankly came out of left field. There’s potential but I’m not sold yet.
