Amy K. Nichols is an up-and-coming YA author, whose first novel, Now That You’re Here, follows Danny, a teenage graffiti artist in a dystopian alternate universe version of Phoenix. After an explosion propels him into our universe, he finds his family is dead and his friends are his enemies. His only comfort is Eevee, a girl in school whom he recognizes from his alternate world, who helps him find his way back to his universe.
The sequel, While You Were Gone, which follows the Danny from our world after he is displaced into the alternate universe, hits stores on Tuesday, Aug. 4. She will host a release party with fellow author Austin Aslan on Aug. 8 at Changing Hands Phoenix.
I spoke with Nichols at a recent Teen Lit Fest here in Phoenix and she offered up some of her favorites.
So Amy K. Nichols, what books do you recommend?
It’s so hard, whenever people bring up books or movies, my brain just shuts down. Books? I don’t read books! But here are a few…
It is an amazing, unique take on mental illness. Not just the subject but the storytelling and format are interesting.
I love his writing, its just beautiful. I can’t wait for the third book.
My favorite book, the one that always comes to mind. I can’t even talk about it because I will completely fall apart, it’s so amazing. The Book Thief is always on my list.
