John Scalzi Recommends

John Scalzi - Credit Athena Scalzi

I’m a relatively new convert to John Scalzi, discovering his work after his appearance at Phoenix Comicon last year. But Redshirts and Old Man’s War were two of my favorite reads last year, and Lock-In wasn’t too far behind.

But I especially appreciate his blog, Whatever, and his snark-filled twitter feed. Whether poking fun at GamerGaters, tweaking Sad Puppies or just taping bacon to his cat, it is always entertaining, and often thought provoking.

End of All ThingsSo I was especially excited (and a little intimidated) to get to interview him for his upcoming signing at the Poisoned Pen in support of his new novel, The End of All Things. You’ll be able to read the full interview in a couple weeks, but in the meantime he offered up some of his anticipated reads.

Note to anyone who follows Scalzi’s twitter feed, it is possible that he is friends with these other authors, he did not disclose that to me. So keep that in mind — it’s all about ethics in book recommendations.

So John Scalzi, what books do you recommend?

I’m not reading a lot right now because I’m in the middle of a writing project and I don’t want to steal from another author, which I will inadvertently do sometimes.

fifth seasonThe Fifth Season — N.K. Jemisin

This is one book I’m looking forward to. I just got the ARC. I’m a huge N.K. Jemisin fan so I’m holding that out as a reward to myself for finishing this thing I’m writing right now

three momentsThree Moments of an Explosion — China Mieville

The new China Mieville, Three Moments of an Explosion, I think. He’s another favorite. I think that comes out this week as well. It is a new collections of short stories and looks great.

killing prettyKilling Pretty— Richard Kadrey

I’m always looking forward to a new book from Richard Kadrey. This is the latest in his “Sandman Slim” series, and those are always a complete blast. It’s been out for a couple weeks.

About Michael Senft

I am a freelance writer and critic from Phoenix Arizona. I spent 10 years covering music, the arts and pop culture for the “Arizona Republic” before life circumstances took me away from newspaper. But I never lost my joy at writing. Or reading.
