Puppies Kenneled as the Hugo Award Winners Announced

hugo_smAfter much weeping and gnashing of teeth over the past four months, the Hugo Awards were announced tonight at Sasquan in Spokane. Despite being reported to the police as potentially inciting violence, David Gerrold hosted the ceremonies with plenty of humor and aplomb, paying tribute to the late Terry Pratchett and Leonard Nimoy while honoring all nominees, both Puppy and Non-Puppy. Co-Emcee Tannarive Due paid tribute to Nichelle Nichols cosplaying as Lt. Uhura during the ceremony.

3 bodyThere were several firsts – the asterisk of the Puppy nominations turning into exclamation points with the largest membership and most votes, and the first translated novel winning the award.

And there were plenty of great moments — Bob Silverberg chanting “Hare Krishna” to bless the ceremony, Campbell winner Wesley Chu “getting political” by declaring his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination. A Dalek presented the award for Best Dramatic Presentation. And Connie Willis brought down the house, offering moral support for Gerrold despite announcing she wouldn’t be a presenter this year.

ms marvelThe best presentation was saved for the final award for best novel, however, broadcast from the International Space Station by astronaut and Sasquan Guest of Honor Kjell Lindgren.

It was a rough night for the Puppies, both Sad and Rabid, as voters roundly rejected their slate nominees, with only the slate-nominated Guardians of the Galaxy winning a rocket. And contrary to other Puppy concerns, nobody was packed into boxcars and shipped off to concentration camps. But the result of their meddling has been record participation, which can only be good for the genre. The more people care, the more they will read and nominate the best that sci-fi and fantasy have to offer.

Wesley-Chu-2014_200x300While Noah Ward was the biggest winner, taking five rockets, diversity still ruled the evening, with two Asian men and a Muslim woman winning awards.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, even those who were part of a slate.
