About Michael

NetGalley Member
I am a freelance writer and critic from Phoenix Arizona. I spent 10 years covering music, the arts and pop culture for the “Arizona Republic” before life circumstances took me away from newspaper. But I never lost my joy at writing.

Or reading.

Since I was a child I’ve loved fantasy and sci-fi, ever since discovering Tolkien and Bradbury in grade school. College introduced me to the canon and modern classics, but my love of the fantastic has always been in the background.

So what do you do with an English degree,  journalism experience and a passion for reading? With the continuing collapse of the newspaper industry, the options are dwindling. Well, I’m going  to teach myself a new trick and channel my creative and critical energies online.

It’s been said that those who can’t do, criticize. I don’t necessarily disagree, but I think criticism is a more noble endeavor than that quote implies. I’m not jealous of the writers whom I will be examining here. I write because I want to share the excitement and the joy that I find in their works.

Well that’s not completely true. But in most cases I don’t take joy in tearing work down. That’s not to say I won’t if the situation warrants – I’m honest, and if a book incites enough anger in me, I will respond in kind.

But mostly I just want to write about what I love.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions, so feel free to comment on anything, point out typos (I’m not much of a word Nazi so they will probably slip through every now and then) or contact me below:
